Everything is on a grand scale at Fountains Abbey, a truly awesome World Heritage Site.
Fountains Abbey is a ruined Cistercian Monastery in North Yorkshire which was founded in 1132.
The abbey operated for over 400 years through many very difficult times (including the Great Plague), which is all well retold in the excellent Monastery museum.
It all came to an end in 1539 when Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the Monastery was destroyed.

The Monastery adjoins the beautiful Studley Royal Park.
